Japan Travelogue: Tokyo Water Bus

Tokyo is nestled on a bay and has a variety of rivers which make for convenient transportation routes. Ferries plow the picturesque waterways of the busy city making it a great way to experience the scenery. The Water Bus (水上バス, Suijō Basu) services is another alternative to subways or trains for getting around Tokyo.

Several notable places the water bus can access are the man-made islands of Tokyo Bay such as the Odaiba shopping and entertainment district and the Sumida River. Odaiba started out as six artificial fort islands made during the Edo period to protect Tokyo from sea attacks.  The iconic Sumida River (隅田川 ) is a beacon of Tokyo. The Sumida River stems from the Arakawa River and flows into Tokyo Bay, passing through several wards of Tokyo: Kita, Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Kōtō, and Chūō. One of Japan’s most anticipated fireworks displays is held there on the last Saturday of July each year.
