Bookstores in Tokyo

There are many bookstores that sell English books and periodicals in addition to their regular stock of Japanese reading material. Books actually published in Japan are more easily available and can be less expensive. Books published in other countries tend to be more spendy in Japan. Keep this in mind when shopping.

Kanda

Kanda is not one store but rather a large used bookstore district in Tokyo. Browsing through all the small- and medium-sized bookstores can take hours. Although known for its extensive selection of Japanese books, Kanda has several excellent bookstores that sell English books. Chief among them is Kitazawa Shoten (03-3263-0011), open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00. Jinbo-cho Station exit.

The Kinokuniya branch at Shinjuku Takashimaya Times Square  (03-5361-3301, same hours, south exit of Shinjuku station) has one of the largest selections of English books in Tokyo, as well as a limited selection of books in European languages.

Maruzen

Maruzen (03-3272-7211) is Japan’s oldest Western bookstore. Located in Nihombashi near Ginza, this store has a large selection of English books and periodicals. It’s open  Monday through Saturday, 10:00 to 20:00, Sundays and holidays 10:00 to 19:00. Take exit B3 at Nihonbashi Station.
