What Standards Must Applicants Meet to Be Accepted to KCP?

KCP International Japanese Language School is a college-level Japanese language program for students and adults who are ready to commit to intensive language study in Tokyo.

Eligibility requirements vary somewhat depending on your age and academic background, but there are a few general standards applicants should be prepared to meet.

What Are the Basic KCP Eligibility Requirements?

Generally, applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have completed high school or earned a GED
• Be prepared to spend approximately three to five hours studying outside of class each day
• Meet any academic requirements that apply to their student status

For currently enrolled college students, KCP requires a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

College graduates and adult non-students over age 21 do not need to provide a transcript when applying directly to KCP.

Do You Need to Know Japanese Before Applying?

There is no single Japanese language level required for all applicants, but some preparation is strongly recommended.

Ideally, students should have completed at least one semester of Japanese before attending KCP. Students with more previous study may find themselves better prepared for the pace of the program.

At a minimum, applicants should become familiar with basic Japanese vocabulary and learn hiragana and katakana before arriving in Japan.

Are the Requirements Different for Recent High School Graduates?

Yes. Recent high school graduates and gap-year students can attend KCP, but additional eligibility requirements apply.

These applicants must be at least 18, have graduated from high school before their KCP program begins, meet KCP’s GPA requirement for recent high school graduates, and have previous Japanese language study.

Because requirements can differ by applicant type, recent graduates should review the current KCP eligibility requirements before applying.

Who Can Apply to Study at KCP?

KCP welcomes full-time undergraduate students from all fields of study, as well as post-graduate students and adult professionals.

The program is open to U.S. students and eligible students and adults from other countries that have a visa treaty with Japan. Applicants who are not native English speakers must also demonstrate sufficient English ability.

More than a particular major or academic path, KCP is best suited to students who are prepared to make Japanese language study a major focus of their time in Tokyo.
