Make the most of being in Tokyo

Kaisu from Summer 2018

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

I liked the tea ceremony since I love green tea and have been drinking it every year since I was a high school kid. I also really liked the kabuki theatre.

Why did you select this program?

The time frame was a good match with my work & study schedule and the location of the school is good as well since it's close enough to my favorite places in Tokyo.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

I like learning new grammar so when I eventually (but rarely instantly) understood something new it felt great. Also, I have an interest in fashion & design and I have some hobbyish projects related to that so I was glad that there were so many Chinese students interested in the same thing in my class, one even shared a very similar work background to mine. I have some experience in teaching languages to middle school kids in Finland so it was very interesting that the way my class was "made to talk" actually worked eventually - my class before midterm had bye-bye dinner for me and one American student yesterday and all of us were talking Japanese 90 % of the time. So I find that pretty amazing. As for least interesting - I cannot say that I like learning kanji. At the same time I know it's necessary so I know I have to.

Any further thoughts or tips for those considering the program or new KCP students?

I guess you have to be committed to the program and also have a good attitude - why would you come to Tokyo and KCP and just whine about everything. I'd also encourage everyone to make the most of being in Tokyo - one of the safest and greatest cities in the world. I've learned some spoken Japanese every day since I've been only using Japanese everywhere and I've rarely spent an evening staying at home here. Unfortunately, many of the great phrases I've learned such as "betsuni nai" and "so nan desu nee" were of little use at class since they're rather informal.

Any other comments or suggestions?

I talked with KCP's staff here in Tokyo about a possible comeback to KCP next year since extending summer to fall semester was not possible now so I'm very happy with KCP and impressed about the speed & quality of learning at KCP. I'd especially like to thank my class' tannin Takahashi sensei, who has a very strict yet excellent & inspiring teaching style.

Testimonials

Going to class every day, and the workload, gave me a sense of what living in Japan would be like. I was able to learn Japanese daily, as well as have enough time in the day to study and explore the country.
