FAQ » Academic Credit
How does transfer of credit work? Will I know ahead of time whether my home university will accept my coursework at KCP?
Of course, in order for you to earn credit, you need to pass the class! If you don’t attend a KCP sponsor or affiliate university, you can earn credit through one of our three sponsor universities (WWU, UI, Lincoln U). This makes it easier to transfer credit to your home university or college, and it provides an official record of your studies in Japan. Please note: Although many, many students have successfully transferred credit through our three sponsor universities, we strongly stress the importance of checking with the registrar or study abroad office of your home university before you sign up for the KCP program.
In the past, many schools do acknowledge credit earned from one of our sponsor schools. Some schools will accept the KCP grade report directly, but you will need to check with your home school about whether they will accept a KCP grade report. Many schools prefer to receive an official transcript from one of our sponsor schools, and you must determine this ahead of time. Schools don’t award retroactive credit.

I have heard of a course fee to transfer credits over. What is that for? Does it mean that, if I don’t pay it, the courses I’d take in Japan wouldn't count as college credit?
After successful completion of our program, our sponsor schools will issue you a transcript. Usually the first transcript is free. Many schools want an “official” transcript. In order to receive an official transcript, you will have to request it from one of our sponsor schools. If you want a KCP grade report, you can request that directly from KCP. There is some paperwork required, and a nominal fee, usually $15-25, to have an official transcript sent to your home school.
We have hosted hundreds of students from different universities and colleges in the US and abroad who have not had any problems transferring credit if they apply through one of our sponsor schools. But each school is different. It is really up to your particular school to determine how the transfer credit will be evaluated. It’s similar to transferring from one college to another college or a community college to a university. The receiving school’s registrar will decide how and what is transferred.
Testimonials
The English support at school was great. I talked to the support staff almost every day; they’re very friendly.
